‘China and UK should focus on cooperation’

For his side, Barrow said that the UK and China are both permanent members of the UN Security Council and influential major countries…reports Asian Lite News

Senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi on Monday said he hopes China and the UK could maintain the momentum of exchange and focus on cooperation, hailing UK’s recent remarks on maintaining stable relations with China.

Wang, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when holding phone talks with Tim Barrow, Rishi Sunak’s National Security Adviser.

China hopes both sides will move in the same direction, maintain the momentum of China-British engaging, remove disturbances, focus on cooperation, settle differences, and promote relations between the two countries in the new situation to calibrate the right direction and start again, he said.

Stressing that China attaches great importance to its ties with the UK, Wang said that “we notice that the UK recently expressed its willingness to maintain an open, constructive and stable relation with China, announcing it is erroneous to have a ‘new Cold War’ mentality and isolate China. Such attitude reveals the UK’s willingness to objectively perceive China’s development.”

Noting that China is the only major one who has not realized the unification among the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Wang said Taiwan being part of China is both a historical fact and a consensus of the international community.

“I hope the British side will continue to abide by the one-China principle, respect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, adhere to the principle of non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, and respect each other’s core interests and major concerns,” he added.

For his side, Barrow said that the UK and China are both permanent members of the UN Security Council and influential major countries.

The UK will continue abiding by the one-China principle and is willing to communicate and deepen cooperation with China to promote a stable, healthy and mature bilateral relationship and jointly address global challenges, he said.

Both sides also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis. Wang reiterated China’s position of persuading peace and promoting talks, hoping that all parties would avoid actions that would further escalate the situation.
