UAE unveils Green IP roadmap to boost innovation

This three-month initiative seeks to enhance the country’s IP competitiveness while supporting its transition to a circular economy. ..reports Asian Lite News

The UAE Ministry of Economy has introduced a new “Green Intellectual Property (IP)” roadmap aimed at fostering innovation, accelerating technology localisation, and driving sustainable projects in the new economy. This three-month initiative seeks to enhance the country’s IP competitiveness while supporting its transition to a circular economy.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the UAE Circular Economy Council, highlighted the UAE’s commitment to strengthening its intellectual property landscape. He noted that Green IP would encourage the adoption of innovative, eco-friendly technologies, reinforcing the nation’s appeal as a global hub for sustainable advancements.

“The roadmap is a key step in raising awareness about the importance of green innovation. It supports the UAE’s vision for a strong and sustainable national economy,” Al Marri said. He added that its launch aligns with this year’s Innovation Month and will involve collaboration with local environmental stakeholders and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) to drive sustainable advancements.

During a media briefing at the Ministry’s Dubai headquarters, officials outlined the roadmap’s strategic goals. Abdulla Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, stressed that sustainability has always been central to the UAE’s economic and cultural fabric. The Ministry remains committed to advancing national projects that promote environmental responsibility and resource conservation.

“The Green IP roadmap aims to integrate cutting-edge digital solutions and advanced technologies into sustainable products and services. We plan to partner with academic and research institutions to embed IP into eco-friendly innovations while ensuring strong legal protections for these projects,” Al Saleh stated.

The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the UAE’s global innovation standing. As part of its objectives, the Ministry aims to introduce a programme to fast-track patent registrations for sustainable technologies, targeting an increase in green patents to 8% of total filings. With 3,622 patent applications recorded in 2024, the roadmap will also reinforce legal frameworks to protect environmental patents.

The UAE has already established a robust legislative framework for IP rights, covering industrial property, trademarks, and copyrights. The country continues to rank first in the region in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2024, reflecting its leadership in intellectual property and sustainable innovation.

With this roadmap, the UAE reaffirms its commitment to fostering a knowledge-driven, eco-conscious economy that safeguards natural resources for future generations.
