HOPE, RASHID, AND BEYOND: UAE SHOWCASES SPACE PROWESS

“Explorers of Space” platform at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai offers an immersive and interactive narrative of the UAE’s past, present, and future in the realm of space science.

The UAE’s growing reputation as a leader in space exploration is front and centre at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, where the “Explorers of Space” platform has emerged as one of the standout attractions within the UAE Pavilion. Designed to capture the nation’s journey from desert sands to the stars, the platform offers an immersive and interactive narrative of the UAE’s past, present, and future in the realm of space science.

The platform brings to life the Emirates’ extraordinary achievements — including the landmark Emirates Mars Mission (Hope Probe), the Rashid Rover lunar mission, and upcoming plans for asteroid exploration. Together, these milestones reflect not only technical excellence but also the country’s long-term commitment to nurturing a knowledge-based economy driven by science, innovation, and youth empowerment.

At the core of this showcase is Space42, the UAE’s pioneering space technology company and the official partner of the Explorers of Space zone. The company has played a critical role in curating the platform’s content, spotlighting its own contributions to satellite communications, geospatial analytics, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into space-based solutions that impact everyday life.

From Earth to Ether: UAE’s Pavilion Theme

Under the pavilion’s theme, “From Earth to Ether,” the UAE presents its national story of transformation — one that bridges a rich cultural heritage with cutting-edge advancements. The narrative is not only about sending spacecraft into orbit but also about how these technologies can support terrestrial needs such as disaster response, sustainable development, and digital infrastructure.

“Supporting the UAE Pavilion is more than a partnership — it’s a reflection of our collective mission to push boundaries,” said Sulaiman Al Ali, Chief Commercial Officer at Space42. “We’re proud to showcase how our integrated approach — combining satellite tech, AI, and data analytics — is redefining how nations think about space and its value to communities and economies.”

Space42 is the first UAE-based space company to fully embed artificial intelligence into its operations, setting a precedent in the region. With a service footprint spanning over 150 countries, the company operates a diverse fleet of satellites delivering advanced solutions in connectivity, Earth observation, and environmental monitoring.

Its current projects include the Thuraya-4 satellite for next-generation mobility services, the Foresight constellation for enhanced Earth monitoring, and the development of Yah 4 and Yah 5, which are integral to the UAE government’s expanding space infrastructure. The company is also building an integrated radar satellite constellation expected to go live by 2027, along with more than 15 new tech products aimed at various sectors.

Strengthening UAE–Japan Collaboration

Expo 2025 Osaka comes at a time of strengthening cooperation between the UAE and Japan in space exploration. The two countries have already collaborated on several successful missions, and Space42 views the Expo as a launchpad for expanding its global partnerships.

“The UAE–Japan space relationship continues to grow in importance,” Al Ali noted. “Expo 2025 gives us an incredible platform to scale our vision, forge new alliances, and drive innovation that transcends borders.”

A Tribute to Heritage and Artistry

One of the most visually arresting features of the Explorers of Space platform is a handcrafted rocket sculpture made entirely from palm fronds (khoos), an ancient Emirati craft technique. Created by women artisans from the House of Artisans, the sculpture took over two months to complete and serves as a poetic symbol of the UAE’s journey — from traditional roots to futuristic aspirations.

This blend of heritage and innovation captures the essence of the UAE Pavilion: a country that honours its past while shaping a bold and imaginative future.

By weaving together scientific ambition with cultural expression, the UAE’s presence at Expo 2025 Osaka signals more than national pride — it underscores the country’s evolving role as a bridge between East and West, past and future, Earth and ether.
