AHLAN RAMADAN

The UAE Council for Fatwa has called upon citizens and residents to observe the crescent moon today evening, which will determine the start of Ramadan 1446 AH.

As the UAE gears up for the holy month of Ramadan, a series of government-led initiatives have been launched to enhance family unity, support humanitarian causes, and ensure public safety and well-being during this spiritually significant time.

Ramadan Crescent Sighting

The UAE Council for Fatwa has called upon citizens and residents to observe the crescent moon today evening, which will determine the start of Ramadan 1446 AH. The Ramadan Crescent Moon Sighting Committee has invited the public to report sightings through official channels, in keeping with Islamic traditions that govern the start of the fasting month. The Council expressed hope that Ramadan would bring blessings, prosperity, and peace to the UAE and the wider Muslim world.

Remote Learning on Fridays

Recognising the importance of family time and the spiritual essence of Ramadan, both private and public schools in the UAE will implement remote learning on Fridays throughout the holy month. This initiative aligns with the directives of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and reflects the UAE leadership’s vision of fostering family unity and instilling Ramadan values in young minds.

The Ministry of Education has introduced the ‘Ramadan with Family’ initiative for public schools, allowing students to engage in religious and cultural activities at home with their families. While students scheduled for exams on Fridays will attend in person, teaching staff will continue their duties as usual. To assist parents and students in adapting to remote learning, the Ministry has developed a comprehensive guidance manual featuring educational and moral activities that align with Ramadan’s core values.

Ramadan Support to Gaza

In a strong show of solidarity, three major UAE charitable organisations—Al Ihsan Charity Association, Sharjah Charity International, and Dar Al Ber Society—have pledged 100 tonnes of food supplies and 5,000 copies of the Holy Quran to support those affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This initiative, launched under Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 and overseen by Sheikh Rashid bin Mohamed bin Ali bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, aims to provide essential relief ahead of Ramadan. The move highlights the UAE’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian aid and its long-standing tradition of supporting vulnerable communities in times of crisis.

Food Safety and Awareness

To ensure the highest standards of food safety and quality during Ramadan, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has launched its annual inspection and awareness campaign targeting food establishments across the emirate.

Inspection teams will conduct extensive checks at restaurants, supermarkets, storage facilities, and distribution centres to identify violations and educate food handlers on best hygiene practices. ADAFSA will also run public awareness campaigns on reducing food waste, smart shopping, and safe food handling through its social media platforms. Additionally, the authority will organise social initiatives, including Iftar meal distributions and a special event, “Honouring Pioneers of Goodness,” to recognise employees and volunteers who contribute to community welfare.

UAE Leaders Grant Pardons

As part of a long-standing Ramadan tradition, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the release of 1,295 inmates from correctional institutions across the UAE. His Highness has also pledged to settle their financial obligations, offering them a fresh start and easing the burden on their families during the holy month.

Following suit, several other Rulers across the emirates have granted pardons ahead of Ramadan: H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, pardoned 1,518 inmates; H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, pardoned 707 inmates; H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, pardoned 506 prisoners; H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah, pardoned 111 prisoners; H.H. Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman, pardoned 207 prisoners.

These gestures of compassion reflect the UAE’s commitment to rehabilitation and social stability, ensuring that more families can reunite and celebrate the holy month together.

A Spirit of Unity and Generosity

As Ramadan approaches, the UAE continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering a sense of unity, generosity, and spiritual reflection. From educational reforms and food safety measures to humanitarian aid and acts of forgiveness, these initiatives reinforce the country’s dedication to upholding Islamic values and ensuring the well-being of its residents. With communities coming together to observe the holy month, Ramadan in the UAE remains a time of faith, family, and giving back to society.
