The celebration was not only a night of entertainment but also a testament to the ongoing contributions of the Birmingham Chinese Society.
The Birmingham Chinese Society (BCS) hosted a vibrant and festive celebration this week, marking the arrival of the Lunar New Year of the Snake. Guests from across the community, spanning four generations, gathered for the round-table event at China Court Restaurant in Birmingham to ring in the new year.
The evening was attended by several distinguished guests, including Lord Mike Whitby, Deputy Lord-Lieutenant Jenny Loynton, Lord Mayor of Birmingham Cllr. Ken Wood, and First Secretary Xiang Xuesong from the Chinese Embassy in London. The event was beautifully compered by Rosalind Yang, Johnny Cheong, and Tak Wan, ensuring a smooth and engaging experience for all attendees.
The celebration featured a series of cultural performances, showcasing the rich diversity of Chinese traditions. The Ling Long Dance Group delighted the audience with a graceful umbrella dance, while Steven Pun, CEO of OHANA 8, captivated the crowd with karaoke. The Aying Man Kung Fu Club performed a dynamic Union dance, and Sophia Zhang wowed everyone with a stunning Mongolian bowl dance. These performances added an extra layer of excitement to the festivities.
Guests were also treated to an auction, conducted by the legendary Jeffrey Yap, and a raffle with a variety of exciting prizes generously donated by sponsors, including Grosvenor, Genting & Rainbow Casinos, Wing Yip & Oriental Supermarkets, and the Birmingham Chinese Parent Association.

The celebration was not only a night of entertainment but also a testament to the ongoing contributions of the Birmingham Chinese Society. The organization’s volunteers provide vital support to the community, helping individuals tackle a range of challenges.
In addition to the dignitaries, attendees included students from Birmingham University such as Adrian Lee, Adrien Kok, Stephen, Dr. Irene Ching, Yiyi Liu, Tom Li, and Wing and his family from Ruby, a well-known Cantonese restaurant in Lichfield.

This annual event is a key highlight for the community, championed by Ken Tong, Chairman, and Irene Chu, President of BCS. Their leadership continues to foster a sense of unity, culture, and support for those in need within Birmingham’s Chinese community.
As the Year of the Snake begins, the Birmingham Chinese Society’s celebration served as a reminder of the importance of tradition, cultural exchange, and community spirit.
