Syria resumes diplomatic mission in Saudi

The Syrian move came after Saudi Arabia announced the reopening of its diplomatic mission in Syria earlier on Tuesday…reports Asian Lite News

Syrian Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday the resumption of its diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia following a reciprocal move from the kingdom.

The decision to reopen the diplomatic mission emanates from the deep ties between both countries, their people’s aspirations, and the importance of enhancing bilateral relations between Arab countries to serve the joint Arab work, the Syrian ministry said in a statement before Tuesday midnight.

The Syrian move came after Saudi Arabia announced the reopening of its diplomatic mission in Syria earlier on Tuesday, indicating that both countries have normalized relations.

On Sunday, Arab foreign ministers decided during a meeting in Cairo to readmit Syria to the Arab League after 12 years of suspension.

On April 12, the Syrian Foreign Ministry announced that Syria and Saudi Arabia had agreed to resume consular services and air flights between the two countries after the minister visited Riyadh for the first time since 2011, a prelude to restoring full diplomatic representation on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry on Monday said that Tehran welcomes Syria’s return to the Arab League (AL).

At a weekly press conference in Tehran, the ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani congratulated Syria in regaining its place and its seat in the AL. He attributed the success to the “decisive victory” of Syria and the resistance front in the fight against “terrorism” in the country and people’s support for the Syrian government.

Kanaani expressed hope that the countries of the region would be able to prepare the ground for greater regional cooperation and convergence based on common interests and through resolving their differences.

Kanaani added that Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will, heading a delegation, travel to Moscow to take part in a quadrilateral meeting on Wednesday about Syria and the resolution of the differences between the Arab state and Türkiye.

He noted that in early April, a meeting on Syria was held in Moscow at the level of deputy foreign ministers among Türkiye, Russia, Iran and Syria, adding Iran has always highlighted the necessity of resolving the differences between Syria and Türkiye and has held talks with Damascus and Ankara within the same framework.

Arab foreign ministers decided in an AL extraordinary meeting held in Cairo on Sunday to restore Syria’s membership in the league after 12 years of suspension.

Türkiye cut relations with Syria in March 2012, a year after the conflict began in the Arab state.

The Turkish army has launched four large-scale operations in northern Syria since 2016. The most recent operation was launched in 2020.

Türkiye says Kurdish militants in northern Syria compromise its security through carrying out “terrorist” attacks.
