Designer Kunal Rawal has quickly become the leading menswear designer in the country. His presentation at the ongoing FDCI Hyundai India Couture Week was a testament to this.
“If I had to describe it simply, I would say it’s all about creating a classical yet contemporary aesthetic-based product, that caters to an array of occasions ranging from modern Luxury to deep-rooted tradition’ said Rawal about his collection.
Actor Ranbir Kapoor walked for the designer wearing a navy embellished bandghala and a stamens trouser.
“Modern-day heirlooms” best describe the collection which featured surface textures, intricate thread-dipped pieces and embroidery to surface embellishments in the form of 3-dimensional motifs. The pieces can best be described as urban, while being nostalgic, and relevant while being consistently rooted in luxury.
Silhouettes are reimagined in innovative architectural shapes, and created of the labels own signature fabrics – to produce an immersive tactile experience. One of the key aspects of the collection is that it pays homage to India and the many cultures embedded within it.
The House of Valaya celebrated this couture season 2023-24 with a medley of craft and elegant style statements. Three signature interpretations Art Deco, Nomade and Royale were presented. The collection traverses a medley of art deco lines and Mughal inlay motifs; it then moves on to Kutch motifs and mirror work and finally to the age-old Mashru fabric of Gujarat in patterns inspired by Portuguese Azulejos tiles.
“This season I chose to delve into the history of Gujarat, rustling up a past that is both intriguing as well as inspiring. Though Gujarat, like most of India, has a history dating back to the stone age, I found it fascinating that between the 16th and 19th centuries, it was part of the Mughal Empire, and the Maratha Empire and then was subjected to colonial rule with the Portuguese and British settling before, of course, India gained its independence. A journey so diverse has created exquisite footprints in the DNA of the land and the resultant multiculturalism forms the inspiring core of my Fall Winter 23-24 collection, Baroda,” said JJ Valaya.
