Pakistan on Thursday claimed that it had intercepted and tracked India’s submarine INS Kalvari’s movement in its territorial waters. Pakistan also shared the video of interception on a social media platform.

The claims were made by Major General Babar Iftikhar, Director General of the Pakistan military’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on social media, who also stated that the incident took place on March 1.

On social media platform Twitter, the Director General stated, “Pakistan Navy Anti-Submarine Warfare Unit intercepted & tracked latest Kalvari class Indian submarine on March 1.”

He also said that the recent incident being the fourth detection in the last five years. He lauded the detection and stated that it is reflection of Pakistan Navy’s competence and resolve to defend maritime frontiers of Pakistan.

The Indian military establishment has refused to comment over the issue.

INS Kalvari is the first of the six indigenously developed submarines of Project-75. The Scorpene Class submarines are being built in India by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with Naval Group, earlier DCNS, France.

The Scorpene submarines are extremely potent platforms, they have advanced stealth features and are also equipped with both long range guided torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles.

These submarines have a state of the art SONAR and sensor suite permitting outstanding operational capabilities.

They also have an advanced Permanent Magnetic Synchronous motor (PERMASYN) as its propulsion motor.

The submarine successfully fired a torpedo and an Exocet SM39 Block 2 anti-ship missile in the Arabian Sea on 2 March 2017 during sea trials. She was delivered to the Indian Navy on 21 September 2017 after successful completion of sea trials. She was commissioned by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 14 December 2017 at Mazagon Dock Limited.

Post 2019 Balakot airstrike conducted by Indian Air Force, Indian Navy deployed INS Chakra along with INS Kalvari to search for the Pakistani submarine PNS Saad which was believed to be deployed.
